Travel Insurance and Mental Health Coverage: What's Really Included
Mental health treatment is one of the most inconsistently covered categories across travel insurance plans — some exclude it entirely, others cap it far below the general medical maximum, and very few advertise this clearly upfront.
The common pattern
Many standard plans distinguish between an acute psychiatric emergency (which may be covered like any other emergency, up to a separate, lower sub-limit) and ongoing mental health treatment or a pre-existing diagnosis (which is often excluded unless specifically disclosed and accepted at underwriting).
What to ask before you travel
- Is emergency psychiatric care covered, and what's the specific sub-limit?
- If you have an existing diagnosis and take regular medication, does that need to be disclosed separately from general pre-existing condition disclosure?
- Does the assistance line have any specific protocol for a mental health crisis, or does it only handle physical medical emergencies?
