Airbnb vs. Long-Term Rental Abroad: Which One First
Signing a 12-month lease in a neighborhood you found on a map, sight unseen, is the single most common regret new expats report. The fix is almost always the same: start short, commit long only after you know the city.
Why short-stay housing first is worth the extra cost
A month of Airbnb costs more per night than a long lease, but it buys you something a lease can't: the ability to actually live in 2-3 different neighborhoods before committing. What looks perfect on a listing site can be a 45-minute commute from where you actually spend your time, or noisier than expected — information you can only get by living there.
The realistic timeline
| Weeks 1-4 | Short-stay housing (Airbnb or similar) in a central, well-connected area |
|---|---|
| Weeks 3-6 | Start viewing long-term rentals in neighborhoods you've now actually experienced |
| Weeks 5-8 | Sign a lease once you've confirmed the commute, noise level, and neighborhood fit in person |
What to check before switching to a lease
- Does the lease require local proof of income or a local guarantor most foreigners can't provide? Some markets require a real estate agent to bridge this.
- Is a security deposit standard, and is it protected (some countries require deposits held in a regulated account)?
- Are utilities included, and is internet already installed or does it need a separate multi-week setup process?
