Common Visa Application Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Most visa rejections aren't about eligibility — they're about a document that doesn't match the checklist exactly. Here are the errors that come up again and again.
The most common mistakes
- Dates that don't match across documents — your insurance certificate, flight itinerary, and hotel booking should show consistent, matching dates. A one-day mismatch is enough to trigger a request for clarification, delaying processing.
- Insurance certificates that don't state the required minimum explicitly — a general policy summary isn't the same as a certificate that names the exact coverage figure and geographic area required. See our Schengen insurance guide for an example of exact requirements.
- Bank statements that don't show the required minimum balance over the required time period — some consulates want 3-6 months of consistent balance, not a single snapshot.
- Photos that don't meet exact specifications — background color, size, and recency requirements are often stricter than people assume; a passport photo from 2 years ago is frequently rejected.
- Incomplete supporting letters — invitation letters, employment letters, or sponsorship letters missing a required detail (dates, relationship, financial commitment) are a common, avoidable rejection reason.
The five-minute check before submitting
Lay every document side by side and confirm: names spelled identically everywhere, dates consistent across all documents, and every number the checklist requires is stated explicitly somewhere in your packet — not implied.
