Family Travel Insurance: Coverage for Kids Explained
Many insurers offer a "free child" clause — one or more children covered at no extra cost when traveling with an insured adult — but the exact age cutoff and conditions vary enough to be worth checking line by line.
What to check
- Age cutoff — commonly under 18, but some insurers cap the free-child benefit at 16 or require the child to be a dependent under 21 if still a student.
- Number of children covered free — usually 1-4 per insured adult; confirm if you're traveling with more.
- Same coverage limits — confirm children get the same medical maximum as adults, not a reduced sub-limit.
Traveling without both parents
Many countries require a notarized consent letter from the non-traveling parent (or both parents if traveling with a non-parent guardian) to prevent international child abduction. This is separate from insurance but commonly checked at the same border crossings — carry it alongside your insurance certificate.
