How to Actually Read Your Travel Insurance Policy PDF
Almost nobody reads the full policy document before buying. Here's how to scan the parts that actually matter in about ten minutes, using the terms from our glossary as a reference.
1. Schedule of Benefits (usually page 1-2)
This table lists every coverage category and its dollar limit in one place — your fastest way to see the medical maximum, evacuation sub-limit, baggage limit and deductible without reading the full document.
2. Definitions section
Skim this for how the policy defines "pre-existing condition," "emergency," and "immediate family" — these definitions govern how claims get evaluated, and insurer-specific wording can differ from the general concept.
3. Exclusions section
This is the section worth reading most carefully. Look specifically for anything relevant to your trip: activities, destinations, or health-related exclusions.
4. Claims procedure section
Note the specific notification window (how many days you have to report a claim) and what documentation is explicitly required — see our claims guide for the general process this section describes.
5. Contact information
Confirm the 24/7 assistance number is a real, staffed line — save it directly in your phone before you travel, not just in the PDF.
